North Sydney railway station is a CityRail station which lies on the North Shore Line and the Northern Line, 5.1 km from Central railway station, Sydney, Australia. It serves the major employment centre of North Sydney and is the fourth busiest railway station in NSW.

The station was created as part of the construction project for the Sydney Harbour Bridge and opened to traffic on 19 March 1932 at the same time that the bridge was opened. Rail services through North Sydney have been electrified since their inception.

History

The station was built in a rock cutting with a street level overhead concourse above the platforms. The station has four platforms which correspond with the four railway tracks that were designed to cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge. At the Waverton end of the station there are four tunnels which have been cut into the rock. Unused stub tunnels - which make provision for trains to travel north to a different destination - were also constructed. Since 1932 there has been no further construction work on these vestigial tunnels.

From 1932 until 1958 two of the rail tracks designed for the bridge were used by trams, the latter being diverted onto Blue St just before they would have entered North Sydney Station. After 1958 the tram tracks were removed from the Sydney Harbour Bridge and replaced by roadway.

As North Sydney has grown to become an important employment centre the platforms have been progressively covered by high-rise commercial buildings built above.

Upgrade

The station was upgraded to handle extra traffic as a result of the opening of the Epping to Chatswood line in 2009. Local business interests and the local council had said that North Sydney station was inadequate for the passenger traffic that flows through it, with 45,000 passengers per day using the station and up to 75,000 passengers by 2021. Major work commenced in mid-2006 to provide an expanded concourse, enhanced station safety and security systems and new lifts and escalators.

Previous services

In the May 2006 timetable change, frequency at North Sydney station was increased from six trains an hour to six to eight trains an hour, in the off peak and on weekends due to redevelopment works at North Sydney station, so it makes it six to eight trains per four between Milsons Point station and Lindfield station and four to six trains per four between Killara station and Gordon station. In the October 2009 timetable change, stations in the Ku-ring-gai region have had significant service cuts, as outbound services are diverted to the Northern Line at Chatswood. North Sydney station has had a cut in weekday services by 17.3%, reflected in a reduced frequency of six trains per hour in each direction during off peak hours.

Platforms and services

The four platforms at North Sydney can have different usages, but the outer platforms are generally the only ones used in off-peak; the middle platforms generally serve terminating trains arriving from the city. Because the four platforms at North Sydney serve a double track railway to the north and south of the station, it has significant capacity for terminating traffic. Up to six trains are stabled in the middle road tunnels at North Sydney and up to six trains may be stabled in the nearby sidings at Lavender Bay during the day.

The station is served by six trains per hour each way, with additional trains during weekday peak hours.
